About Me

James Parnell is an artist and facilitator based in Den Haag. His work investigates how communities are built, sustained, and sometimes undone. Through performances, workshops, publications, and curated events, he explores conflict, apologies, and the tensions that shape collective life.

James’s practice is grounded in a commitment to archiving community stories. He has used zine-making, independent publishing, and panel discussion to document the communities he was part of, loved, or deeply admired. He currently works with participatory practices, using workshop and game design to explore challenging issues within groups.

Drawing from his experiences within queer and trans communities of color, activist networks, religious communities, neighborhood groups, and institutional spaces, James’s work always asks: Who makes up the “we” within a group? What contradictions live within the communities we’re a part of? What are we willing to do to belong—and what stories risk getting lost in the process?

His work has appeared in museums, universities, community organizations, and corporate settings. From 2018–2024 he was Head Curator of the WORM Pirate Bay at WORM Rotterdam. From 2017-2023, he co-organized BARTALK, a performance and storytelling series in The Hague.

James is available for performances, workshops, talks, collaborations, and community archiving projects.

If you’d like to work together or bring a project to your community or institution, don’t hesitate to reach out.
